Hospital Visit # 2

On Hayden's 2 week birth day he was acting VERY fussy. He wouldn't eat from noon on and by 7 pm Jason and I became very concerned. We called the pediatrician's number and was connected to a nurse at CHOC (Children's Hospital of Orange County). She asked a lot of questions and gave me advise for a colicy baby. She said try to feed again and she'd call back. By 9 pm, still no eating. The nurse said if he vomits (large projectile spit up) to call her back. At 9:30 pm he started vomiting... 3 in a row. The nurse then told us to take him to the ER at Hoag Hospital.
After spending all night in the ER and running a variety of tests and getting him IV fluids, we were released with instructions of how to feed a vomiting baby. Right before we left, we changed his diaper and were astonished to find a HUGE bloody stool. The ER Dr. was VERY concerned by this and said "you're not going anywhere". We were then transferred to CHOC Hospital via ambulance a 6 am. He immediately had an upper GI which appeared to show some occlusion/blockage in his intestines. The CHOC surgeon's meet with us at 10 am and said they'd need to do surgery within the hour to make sure his intestines weren't twisting. If they were, they could cut off the blood supply and he could loose his intestines.

The surgery confirmed that the intestines were twisting, dubbed "malrotation of the intestines". The surgery went well (less than 1 hour) and we were moved to a recovery room. By this time we haven't sleep in over 36 hours and are exhausted. I headed home to sleep while Jason stayed in Hayden's room to sleep and watch him. Hayden appeared to be in pain so they gave him a small dose of Morphine. And 3 min. later he stopped breathing... Jason was the only one in the room. He ran down the hall and got the nurse who ordered a "Code White" (infant that's stopped breathing). A ton of people ran into the room to work on little Hayden. Then ended up putting a breathing tube down his throat to breath for him. He was then transferred to the PICU (Prenatal Intesive Care Unit) where he remained for a few days (until he could breath on his own). Afterwards we returned to the recovery area and remained there until his intestines started functioning again and he could tolerate feedings. The whole ordeal was a very long 12 days! We are so glad it's over and we're at home again.
